How does it work?
MemBot is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and uses very complicated mathematics to produce human-like text.
It has learned everything it knows by reading loads of webpages, books and other real examples of language being used.
The wide-ranging knowledge MemBot has built up helps to inform its responses during conversations with you!
Why are you using AI technology?
We believe that in order to actually acquire another language, you need to do three things:

- Immerse
- Communicate
We’re using this technology to help you Communicate.
Our ultimate goal is: “To help you confidently communicate with real people in another language.”
Often, when learning a language, we may not have the confidence to immediately chat with native speakers.
MemBot offers zero judgement towards any mistakes you make - in fact, they’re encouraged! It provides grammar corrections and suggested responses if you get stuck and you can practice communicating in real life situations.
This is why we’re using MemBot, as we believe it’s an excellent stepping stone for learners to build up confidence to then go out and speak their target language in the real world.
Am I speaking with a real person?
Our hope is that you feel like you’re chatting with real native speakers. This means that we will have created something which is exciting and engaging. It also means MemBot will be more effective in preparing you for real-life situations!
However, it is important to remember that the messages are not created by real people.
Therefore you should not take advice from the AI generated responses.
However, like native speakers, MemBot may make mistakes or say something inappropriate… In these instances, please do report the messages so our internal team can train MemBot and ensure the same mistake isn’t repeated twice.
How do I report something?
To report a response from MemBot please click on the three dots next to the message and click ‘report’.
Reporting messages which you find inappropriate helps us massively in ensuring that MemBot does not repeat this behaviour (so thank you 🙂).
How do you avoid bias and discrimination?
There are content filters in place to prevent MemBot from saying anything rude. With that being said, there is a slight chance that bias and discrimination could creep in because MemBot was originally trained on documents, books and webpages written by humans.
If you believe that any of MemBot’s messages are biased or discriminatory then please do report them so we can take action and train the technology to not make the same mistake twice.

Is MemBot designed to replace real people?
One genuine and understandable fear surrounding AI technology is that it will replace real people and negatively affect social interaction.
A reminder of our goal with using this technology: “To help learners confidently communicate with real people in another language.”
We’re definitely not trying to replace real people; nothing can replace the experience of talking to a real-life native speaker!
We believe that this is merely a safe space and stepping stone towards feeling confident enough to communicate in real life.
